Day 2: Making This "Full House" a Home

Today, I began my summer internship. Much of the day was made up of filling out paperwork and listening to lessons I had already heard last summer. There was also a lot of laughter and some arts and crafts (more on that tomorrow). Ultimately though, today was an excellent start to what is sure to be a summer I will never forget.

Given how tired I am, I will just write down a few highlights from today:

At my lunch break today, I walked with some other teachers a few blocks down from where we were meeting to Alamo Square, the park which serves as a backdrop for the opening credits to America's beloved syndicated sitcom, and 1989's runner-up for "Most Promising New Fall Television Series" at the Young Artist Awards, Full House. Indeed, the neighborhood was idyllic and picturesque, even despite the gloomy skies above it. My main takeaway from this experience however was that the titular house must have been a TARDIS, because the set featured on the show was clearly much larger square-footage wise than the actual homes in its supposed neighborhood.

Whatever happened to predictability? Also, socialism?
A second highlight of today came after work when my new buddy Francisco (ironic name, eh? Believe it or not, his last name is even more ironic!) and I decided to go grocery shopping at Trader Joe's. I was hesitant at first because I know in Philly TJ's tends to be fairly expensive, and given the high cost of living here I figured the prices would be even more astronomical. I was pleasantly surprised however to find that the food was more than affordable. In fact, in talking to friends who went shopping elsewhere for groceries today, I figured out that it is probably the cheapest option available and it is super conveniently located right near where I am staying. I was able to get lunches and dinners for the next five days for $30 and change. One of the items I purchased, which I am beyond excited to try, is... drumroll please... microwaveable fried macaroni and cheese balls. Every word I just typed is something I love, and my good old buddy Joe the Trader decided to send down an angel from his cabana in the heavens to put them all together in one cheap little package just for me. Needless to say, as long as it lives up to its name, this will likely become a staple food for me over the next 56 days.

No, Joe. Thank YOU.
Tonight, I spent some quality time with the other teachers living in my dorm in our communal lounge. We all worked on our nightly homework assignments together, got to know one another a little better, shared gluesticks and markers and made plans for the rest of the summer. Once I was finished with my work, I ducked out and took a quick shower to freshen up. I then proceeded to perform a feat never previously attempted: I put toothpaste on my toothbrush in a mirror using only one hand. Successfully. If that doesn't warrant some sort of trophy, I don't know what does. (Looking at you, Rio.)

I know this post was hardly thorough, but I'm really tired and need some shuddeye. These were definitely standout moments in my day, but don't get me wrong. The whole day was wonderful, and I am pumped to wake up and do it all again!

And maybe, if I'm lucky, I'll dip into some of those delicious fried mac-n'-cheese balls for dinner.

Until next time,
Nate
